Getting started
What areas in Gauteng does Champion Electrical & Solar cover?
We cover all of Gauteng — Centurion and greater Pretoria (Tshwane), Johannesburg, Sandton, Midrand, Randburg, Roodepoort, Fourways, Soweto, the East Rand (Kempton Park, Benoni, Boksburg, Germiston, Springs, Alberton, Edenvale, Tembisa), the West Rand (Krugersdorp, Mogale City) and the Vaal (Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark). Our base is 278 Erasmus Street, Centurion, Pretoria.
How do I get a quote?
Call or WhatsApp 072 468 5543. Send photos of your board, roof or the fault and a short description, and we will give you an indication immediately and a firm written quote after a site check.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
A call-out fee applies for fault finding and diagnostic visits and it is quoted up front. Quotations for new installations and solar are free.
Do you do emergency and after-hours work?
Yes. We take emergency electrical call-outs across Gauteng, including evenings, weekends and public holidays.
Are you registered and insured?
Yes. Our work is carried out by registered electricians in accordance with SANS 10142-1, and we are authorised to issue Certificates of Compliance.
Certificates of Compliance
How long is an electrical Certificate of Compliance valid?
Two years, as long as no alterations or additions were made to the installation after issue. Any new fixed electrical work needs its own certificate.
How much does a COC cost in Gauteng?
For an average home the inspection and certificate is typically a few hundred to around a thousand rand. Any remedial work needed to make the installation compliant is quoted separately before it starts.
How long does it take to get a COC?
The inspection itself takes 1 to 3 hours for a normal home, and the certificate is issued within 24 to 48 hours if no repairs are needed.
Who pays for the COC when a house is sold?
The seller is legally responsible for providing a valid electrical COC to the buyer at transfer, along with electric fence, gas and plumbing certificates where applicable.
Do I need a separate certificate for my electric fence?
Yes. An Electric Fence System Certificate of Compliance is a separate document required whenever a property with an electric fence is transferred.
What commonly fails a COC inspection?
Missing or faulty earth leakage protection, no bonding of metal water pipes, exposed live conductors, incorrect breaker sizes, missing covers or blanks in the DB, non-compliant outdoor plugs, and DIY extensions without earthing.
Solar & backup power
What size solar system do I need for a Gauteng home?
Most homes start with a 5kW hybrid inverter, 5–10kWh of lithium battery and 6–12 panels. Homes with a pool pump, borehole, electric geyser and multiple aircons usually need 8kW–12kW. We size the system from your actual appliance list and municipal bill.
How much does solar cost in South Africa?
Cost is driven mostly by battery capacity and inverter size. A small essential-loads backup system is the entry point; a full hybrid system with a large battery bank and enough panels to cover daytime usage costs significantly more. We give you an itemised quote so you can see exactly what each component costs.
Will solar run my geyser, stove and pool pump?
It can, but those are heavy loads. It is usually far more cost effective to keep the geyser and stove on grid (or move the geyser to a timer or heat pump) and put lights, plugs, Wi-Fi, fridge and TV on backup.
How long do solar batteries last?
Quality lithium (LiFePO4) batteries are rated for 6,000+ cycles, which is roughly 10 to 15 years of daily use. Panels typically carry 25-year performance warranties.
Do I need council approval for solar in Gauteng?
Grid-tied systems that can feed back must be registered with your municipality (City of Tshwane, City of Johannesburg or Ekurhuleni) and require an approved inverter and a COC. We advise on the paperwork for your area.
Inverter and batteries or a generator?
A generator is cheaper up front, runs indefinitely on fuel and suits long outages, but it is noisy, needs fuel and maintenance. Solar with batteries is silent, automatic, needs no fuel and reduces your bill, but costs more initially. Many clients use both.
Can solar be installed on any roof?
We mount on IBR, corrugated, concrete tile, slate and flat concrete roofs. North-facing pitches perform best in Gauteng, but east-west splits work well too. Very old or damaged roofs may need repair first.
Faults & repairs
Why does my earth leakage keep tripping?
The most common causes are a failing geyser element, moisture in an outdoor plug or light fitting, a faulty appliance, a nicked cable, or an overloaded circuit. We test each circuit's insulation resistance to isolate the one leaking to earth.
Half my house has no power — what should I check first?
Check whether a single breaker has tripped, and reset the main earth leakage. If it trips again immediately, unplug everything on that circuit and try once more. If it still trips, call us — there is a fault in the fixed wiring.
My lights flicker or dim when appliances start — is that dangerous?
It can be. Flickering often indicates a loose neutral, an overloaded circuit or a poor supply connection, all of which can overheat. It should be tested rather than ignored.
There is a burning smell near my DB board. What now?
Switch off the main switch and call us immediately. A burning smell at the board usually means a loose or arcing connection, which is a fire risk.
How do I know my house needs rewiring?
Signs include a board with no earth leakage unit, cloth or rubber insulated cable, two-pin plugs, frequent tripping, warm switches and scorch marks. A test report confirms it.
Gates, fencing & appliances
Why did my gate motor stop working during load shedding?
Almost always a dead backup battery. Gate motor batteries last about 2 to 3 years and then the motor runs off mains only, so it dies the moment the power goes out.
Can you repair any brand of gate motor?
We service and repair the common South African brands including Centurion, ET, Hansen, Digi and Gemini, covering boards, batteries, limits, remotes and safety beams.
Why does my electric fence keep alarming?
Typical causes are vegetation touching the strands, a cracked insulator, a broken or slack wire, a failing earth spike or a dying energiser battery. We test the line section by section.
Can you install my geyser and issue a certificate?
Yes. We install and replace geysers with the correct isolator, breaker, drip tray and bonding, and issue a COC for the work.
Working with us
Do you give guarantees on your work?
Yes. Workmanship is guaranteed, and all supplied equipment carries the manufacturer's warranty.

Do you take on commercial and industrial work?
Yes — offices, retail, warehouses and light industrial, including three-phase distribution, machine wiring, generator changeovers and compliance audits.
What are your operating hours?
Monday to Sunday, 07:00 to 19:00, with 24/7 emergency call-outs across Gauteng.
